Our editors review the Diablo Sport Predator programmers and Power Puck modules.
When the first power Programmers and modules were first released, many automotive enthusiasts were skeptical as to what was hidden in that little black box. Nowadays, Programmers and modules are a common upgrade but we have to keep in mind that the ability of the unit relies on the knowledge of the manufacturer’s programmer.
Needless to say, deciphering code from any OEM manufacturer is a nightmare but some Programmers do it better than others. We have had several instances that we have been able to work with Diablo Sport, who produce the Predator Programmers for Ford and GM vehicles, as well as the Power Puck for Dodge vehicles. These products simply upload new programming that delivers anywhere from 15 to 100 horsepower, depending on the application and if the engine is gas or diesel.
The Predator Programmer is one of the easiest Programmers to work with. The systems are self contained and the menu makes it simple to install a new program to your vehicle. In all, it takes about four-minutes to upload a new program via the vehicle diagnostic port that is normally located under the dash. The menu is clear to read and you merely have to answer some yes or no questions, followed by a series of turning the ignition key on or off to begin the loading process.
The thing we liked about the Predator is that it first stores the factory programming in the unit, so that your vehicle can be easily restored to stock when applicable. Diablo Sport also has a good reputation in the industry and we were pleased to note that from the several units we tested, the horsepower gains matched those that were claimed.
Another feature of the Predator Programmer is the fact that the unit can also be used to gather diagnostic information. This allows you to use the unit more than once and you can use it as a scan tool to diagnose and read trouble codes as well.
The Diablo Power Puck is a slightly different unit. This is not a programmer but a module that fits inline with the factory computer input. These are also easy to install but depending on the vehicle, may require the removal of the battery or computer from its home in the engine compartment or under the dash. The Power Puck simply plugs inline with the computer’s wiring harness. This also makes it easy to remove if necessary. The Power Puck works by providing performance data codes that are stored into its memory chip. It alters some of the input signals from the computer to deliver additional fuel or timing when needed. The Power Puck got its name from the hockey puck shape that Diablo decided to use for their system. Despite its funny appearance, the Diablo Power Puck has proven to be reliable and meets their advertised horsepower figures.
Diablo Sport also has an excellent website that not only features an excellent tech support, they also offer updates that you can download directly to your computer or programmer with the use of a PC interface cable.
The Predator is a downloader that reads and stores your factory programming and downloads new performance programming. | | |
